These are a New Year’s Eve tradition at our house! DMc and I determined years ago that our favorite way to spend NYE is at home in our jammies, with a fire going, music playing, having cocktails and eating snacks. We usually have these along with some homemade bread and cheese as our “main dish” for the evening (the bread is homemade, the cheese is not). If you have any weenies left, they’re fabulous for supper a day or so later with some mac & cheese on the side!
Spicy Boozy Cocktail Weenies
These are a New Year's Eve tradition at our house.
Ingredients
- 3 lbs Cocktail weenies (I absolutely insist on Hillshire Farms Beef Lit'l Smokies for mine)
- 1 bottle Spicy barbecue sauce (I use Stubb's Spicy)
- 1/2 cup Ketchup
- 1/4 cup Heinz 57 sauce
- 1/3 cup Honey
- 1 tsp Soy sauce
- 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 cup Bourbon (or other whisky but I'd stick to a blended Canadian if not using bourbon)
Instructions
- Pan-sear the weenies to render out some of the grease and get some "goody" going on the outsides
- Mix everything else in a slow cooker – I use my 3.5 quart smaller slow cooker for this recipe and it's perfect
- Use a slotted spoon to load the browned weenies into the sauce and stir
- Put the lid on the slow cooker
- Cook on high for one hour, stir, lid back on
- Cook on low for two hours, stir, lid back on
- Set your slow cooker to warm if you have that setting – if not, leave it on warm and stir every half hour or so until the goodies are all consumed
Notes
Yes, searing the weenies first is worth the effort of washing the skillet and spoon. It really, really is!
